Discord Moderation and Rule Interpretations
Rules are rules, but they may be interpreted differently, and it can sometimes be difficult to know if a rule has been broken or not. To make sure every moderator knows what to do in what situation, feel free to check here if in doubt.

In general, members can't be expected to understand the rules, and many may not have read them. In a perfect world we could, but in this world, it's a huge issue for any popular community. Luckily most users don't break the rules anyway, and therefore we usually just hand out a warning.

How to warn a user

1. Find out the exact rule the user has broken. If you're in doubt, ask in #staff or check these interpretations.
2. Delete the message(s) in question
3. Use command in the current chat room: "?warn @User Write a reason". Make sure to include which rule number is violated, and be respectful. The user will automatically receive a direct message.

Example warning command: ?warn @Vidoy Violation of rule 1 by spamming

Please only use warnings unless the user breaks the same rule repeatedly.

How to timeout a user

Allowed timeouts are currently one day the first time, or two days if the user breaks the same rule again after being timed out for one day.

1. Find out the exact rule the user has broken. If you're in doubt, ask in #staff or check these interpretations.
2. Delete the message(s) in question
3. Use command in the current chat room: "?ban @User [Time] Write a reason". Make sure to include which rule number is violated, and where the user may read the full rules. Be respectful. The user will automatically receive a direct message.

Example timeout: (1 day) ?ban @Vidoy 1440 Repeated violation of rule 1 by spamming. Discord rules may be found in the sm64hacks.com forums.

Example timeout: (2 days) ?ban @Vidoy 2880 Repeated violation of rule 1 by spamming. Discord rules may be found in the sm64hacks.com forums.

How to permanently ban a user

If the user is a bot, or clearly has no intention of taking part in the community (i.e. just tries to sell something) you may skip these steps and skip to step 3.

This is a last resort, and should only be used if the user appears to be incapable of adapting to the rules. The user must at least have been warned once and timed out twice over the same rule.

1. Make sure the user has broken a rule several times, and does not appear to change. Feel free to check the #warnings log or ask other volunteers if in doubt.
3. Use command in the current chat room: "?ban @User Write a reason". Make sure to include which rule number is violated, where the user may read the full rules, and who the user may complain to. Be respectful. The user will automatically receive a direct message.

Example ban command:

?ban @Vidoy repeated violation of Rule 1. Discord rules may be found in the sm64hacks.com forums. If you feel like you've been falsely accused or misteated, send a direct message to Vidoy#8767 and explain your case.

If the banned user has violated Discord rules or sends threatening messages after being banned, the messages must be reported to Discord. You can either do this yourself by going to https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or message Vidoy#8767.

Rule Interpretations

Quote:1. No spamming or excessive use of bot commands.

Avoid spamming, except for in the #off-topic section.
We generally define spam as:
- Many messages or bot commands sent in a short amount of time
- Unnecessary use of ALL-CAPS-MESSAGES
- Messages without highly unserious content ex. ernferifkerÆGREJEROgir

You may still send bot commands in the #bot-commands section.

Moderators may define spam as it happens and give a warning.

The #off-topic section is where people can "get the spam out of their system" if they wish to. Although it still shouldn't be more than 10 messages, so feel free to post a message to tell them to "break it up" if so. If the user doesn't stop, issue a warning.

If you suspect a user is an unallowed bot, try and address the user first. If no response it's probably a bot, and you may simply kick the user.

Quote:2. No discussing extremist politics, such as sexism and racism.

We do generally support , and want to provide freedom of speech in our servers, but as this mainly is a place for discussing SM64 rom hacks, we ask that these conversations are taken somewhere else.

Please generally refrain from discussing extremist politics, as racism, sexism, religious hatred. Please try to keep political discussion to a minimun unless it's directly or indirectly related to the content or the community of SM64Hacks.

If a political discussion is angering several users AND has nothing to do with relevant political discussions like Super Mario, Nintendo, rom hacking or copyright, post a message telling them to take the discussion somewhere else. If the discussion doesn't stop, try to find the threadstarter and warn/ban user. If not, warn the users still involved.

Be VERY careful not to take sides in the discussion, even if you have an opinion yourself. SM64Hacks have no expectations of the political opinions our users should have, and it's important that our volunteers appear neutral in these situations to make sure this message gets through. Staying neutral can be tough, feel free to ask someone else to moderate the discussion if so.

Quote:3. No commercial advertising, but you may still share relevant content if you feel like.

Avoid directly or indirectly linking or advertising to any content which you, your team or associates will directly or indirectly gain or profit off showing. Profit/Gain can be ex. money, credits, community growth or similar.

The link or advertisement is still allowed if at least one of the statements below are true:
- The content is hosted by SM64Hacks or one of our affiliates
- The content is entirely made by you, your team or your associates
- The content is a fan creation (ex. a rom hack, fan game, fan fiction, drawings etc.)
- The content is a website or community that is non-commercial, and is not directly similar to SM64Hacks

Feel free to ask an administrator/moderator if you are unsure. Moderators or staff may also make exceptions to this.

Remember, sharing links to relevant content is not advertising, this rule does not apply if you undoubtedly don't have any ownership or affiliation with the content. Feel free to share any video, picture, website, game or other content you feel like sharing with the community Mario

A user may basically share any content, unless it's undoubtedly only shared for the user to make money, or to "steal" members from our community. Try to see the intention and context of which the post has been made.

On-the-edge examples:

Quote:Right intent: I made this super Mario T-Shirt, what do you guys think of the design? [Link to T-Shirt sales page]

The user is trying to ask about opinions about a design, even if the link is to a sales website. The intentions are to get an opinion about the design.

Wrong intent: Hey guys, check out my new merch store! We have lots of Super Mario merch on sale right now! [Link to store]

The user is undoubtedly trying to make money.

Generally we don't allow links to other discord servers, social media or forums that may "steal" users from our userbase, unless it's to refer to a specific discussion going on there.

Quote:Right intent: Hey guys, I've been making a Discord for fans of Super Mario games, feel free to join! [Discord Link]

The Discord is for discussing Super Mario games in general, and does not directly compete with SM64Hacks.

Right intent: Hey there, I've been making this news website for Mario 64 hacking, we'll be posting news and updates regularly about new hacks. Website: [Website link] Discord: [Discord link]

The discord has a relevant website which isn't in direct tompetition with SM64Hacks as we don't really make news articles. An attached Discord to this is ok.

Wrong intent: Hey everyone, check out my new SM64 hacking Discord! [Discord link]

The user is clearly attempting to compete with SM64Hacks and steal members. delete the message and warn the user.

Right intent: Wow, this sm64 hack discussion is out of hand [Link to post on another forum]

The user is trying to share a relevant discussion with the community, and does not intent to steal members.

Of course this may be easy to abuse, and some members may try to work around this to gain free advertising. We've decided to let this slide for now, as this hasn't really been a huge issue. However, we may need to change the rules if this becomes an issue in the future.

Quote:4. No flaming e.g. insulting, abusing or harassing threatening other members.

Serious verbal attacks or any direct or indirect personal insults are not allowed. Feel free to joke around, but make sure nobody gets offended.

Whether or not a user is offended or not is up to the insulted user. Feel free to apologize.

Do not threat or behave threatening against another member. Any threats towards users which may be serious will be reported to the staff of Discord, and may make you subject to legal consequences.

Racial slurs like "nigger", "japs" etc. may be used in mild jokes, quotes or in other friendly manners, we have decided not to ban the words directly in order to preserve community freedom of speech. However, their use will still break other rules:

- If the words are used offensively towards a user, or the user being called such a word is offended, it is considered a rule violation regardless of the intention it was said. (Rule 4)
- If such words are used angrily with other curse words, it's mostly considered excessive cursing. (Rule 6)
- Several or irrelevant racist quotes may be an attempt of starting an extremist political discussion. (Rule 2)

We have a close-to-zero tolerance policy for threats in any way. Threats may look like a joke, but may not always be as much of a joke as they seem, and even threats in the form of a joke must always give at least a warning.

Example joke threat: "You better finish that rom hack tonight, or ELSE Winking Toad"

Threats that have even the slightest chance of possibly being carried out, must be reported to the Discord staff. report throug this link https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new or ask Vidoy#8767 to report it for you.

Threat which may be carried out: "I wanna play that hack tonight! You know i know where you live!"

Normal sayings like i.e. "x or riot" is not a threat.

Quote:5. No adult content, links to viruses, scams or illegal programs, or chat bots not approved by a staff.

We do not allow adult or pornographic content of any kind.
Sharing any form of digital virus or scam is highly illegal and will be reported to the Discord staff, this may make you subject to legal consequences. Applications which are known to be safe, but may appear as a virus in some antivirus programs, a.k.a. false positives are still allowed.

This discord is generally allowed for users of all ages. We ask that you generally avoid excessive cursing and sharing highly mature content, especially if you suspect any user(s) currently chatting/talking are particularly young.

We generally do not allow any non-approved bots or programs sending automated responses. If you want to bring or test out a bot on our server, only do this if you have permission from a staff member.

We will not stop you from using and build upon any content made by our members in your own projects, but you will have to leave the appropriate credit upon publishing.

All content with uncensored genitals are considered pornographic. Censored content may also be pornographic if younger members can see that a sexual activity is going on in the picture or video.

If someone wants to bring a bot into the server, it must be either for social testing, something they cannot do on a test discord server, or for fun and entertainment for the other users. The user inviting the bot must ask a moderator beforehand, and you may approve this if the bot has a valid reason and does not severely break any rules.

The bot may generally only stay for max 24 hours, and please pay some attention to make sure the bot doesn't break any server rules. If the bot is popular, feel free to make a vote and we can consider making it permanent.

Someone using content from other hacks or community media in their own hacks, like i.e. models, pictures or sound, can sometimes be frowned upon. Feel free to voice your opinion, but this is not a moderation issue and you may not use moderation to deal with this.

Quote:7. Respect opinions of other users. Feel free to debate, but keep the discussion objective and respectful.

As stated, this discord server is mainly for discussing sm64 rom hacks, and we ask that you take mature debates that involves politics, racism, sexism etc. somewhere else, unless it's directly related to the community. If you wish to discuss a topic, make sure to debate objectively and respectfully, and avoid stirring up anger.

To debate objectively, it can be smart to separate facts and opinions. If it's a fact, state who said it, (e.g. "This news site says this about that") and if it's an opinion, make sure everyone knows it. (e.g. "I think that's better, that's my opinion though")

8. We only allow constructive criticism of work and content made by other users. Please be respectful.

Please avoid unnecessarily critisizing hacks or other work made by other users. Remember that most of content posted in our channels are made by non-professionals in their own free time. Necessary criticism is still important, like constructive criticism to help the user improve, if they wish. Receiving criticism can be hard, so make sure to be respectful and try your best not to stir up the creator.

To make sure the user takes your criticism constructively, here's some tips:
- Be specific about exactly what points you're criticizing, and also how these could be improved. If you don't know exactly how, at least give some pointers.
- Make sure the user knows this is your opinion. This isn't easy, but statements like like "I think", or "In my opinion" etc. does wonders.

These rules were implemented as a result of a heated debate in our Discord between using Blender og Google SketchUp as a program to make SM64 hacking models. The debate escalated severely, and people began to take sides in the community which even got referenced in rom hacks:

Basically any hack discussed which showed any proof of using one or the other resulted in a new debate between the sides. Please try your best to avoid this kind elitism in the community. This is usually best stopped by making sure people discuss subjects in a friendly manner, as this tends to avoid unserious discussions and brings out facts instead of hatred.

Be on the lookout for discussions which angers users, feel free to discuss it in #staff if you are unsure. Avoid judging based on the discussion content, but on how the content is discussed.

Quote:9. Do not harrass anyone on direct messages (DMs) based on discussions or info from this server.

We generally only moderate based on happennings inside our Discord server. However, if someone is harassed based on happennings inside our server, we reserve the right to still warn or ban you from our servers in order to prevent and stop harassement of our users.

Harassement in this case may be several things:
- Continuing a discussion from the sm64hacks discord directly with a specific user without the consent of the user
- Continous direct messages clearly based on member information from our serer, where the other user either doesn't respond, or states not wishing to speak outside of the server.
- Threats or scams, viruses or other programs sent by direct message based on discussions or informations
- All of the above, but continously messaging the user through mutiple discord accounts

Harrassement may otherwise be defined by moderators as it happens. New definitions will only result in a warning first time. If you wish to contact a user, we reccommend that this is agreed upon in our servers beforehand, or that you send the user a friend request together with a message of where you know the user from, and what you wish to discuss.

This rule is made to avoid any negative implications from joining our server. However, you must be sure beyone reasonable doubt that the harassement would not be possible without the SM64Hacks Discord server before punishing a user based on this rule, we may not interfere in conflicts whch happens outside of our server.

Only harrassement defined by this rule applies, we do not apply other rules outside of the server.

Quote:Warnings and consequences
We expect everyone using our Discord to have read, understood and accepted the rules. If you have any questions about the rules, feel free to contact @Vidoy#8767.

First time incidents will generally be considered mistakes, and you will only get a warning.

If you break the same rule after being warned or the incident is generally considered severe, you will be banned from our server for one day. The time of ban will generally be doubled each time you break the same rule. After breaking the same rules 3 times or more, we will consider a lifetime ban.

If you have been banned for life, we might still reverse the ban after a rightful amount of time, usually at least 30 days under normal circumstances.

If we suspect your violation to be intentional and premidiated, your account to intentionally be controlled by a bot, or we suspect your intentions being not to take part in our community whilst breaking our rules, you may be banned for life without a warning.

Any violation we deem necessary to be reported to the Discord staff will generally make you subject to a lifetime ban from our server as well. We will not consider any reversal of this until any relevant charges, including legal charges, have been either dropped or fully carried out.

Remember, if a member must break the SAME rule consecutively to be banned. If a user e.g. breaks rule 1 and then rule 3, the user gets two warnings. But if the user e.g. breaks rule 2 twice, this results in a one-day ban.

Feel free to be more lenient if you wish to, e.g. warn an extra time or talk to the user, as long as it's done in a manner that's fair and equal towards all users.

Quote:Have fun!

We at the SM64Hacks staff will do all in our power to make sure you and your friends will have a good time in our server. Simply follow the rules as good as you can and listen to our mods, and we're sure you'll have a good time at our server Mario have fun![/i]

Remember, the main objective of moderation is to make sure everyone has a good time Mario
